It's a real game, but maybe your family had some home-made rules! I learned it from my ex-husband (who was a navy brat - but on the west coast) and he always cheated, so I was never sure which were home-made rules too. Is each hand worth 11 points and you play to 21? I've never heard of anyone else who plays that and always thought it was a freaky game my family invented.
