Year End Wrap Up

What a dumpster fire this year has been. We all thought 2020 was bad. It’s like 2025 said hold my six-pack of beer.

The better-half and I did enjoy a few out of town trips:

Morgantown, WV
Austin, TX
Philadelphia, PA
Ocracoke, NC
Pittsburgh, PA

One good thing: We got the godforsaken bushes cut off the front of the yard. We didn’t die, but there are still a handful of hours left in the year.

About all I can say is we survived, hopefully.

The cheeto in chief is chasing his enemies down in court and sending in troops against Americans.
The administration refuses to come to the table to end the shutdown.
The administration has basically rid itself of black officials in senior roles.
The affordable care act is Obamacare because people don’t understand that. Maybe it was the Tylenol?
The weekend warrior wagged his finger at career military leaders.

This is what the majority of Americans voted for. We are embarrassingly stupid.

We live down the street from what used to be an old folk’s home (assisted living, independent, nursing care) and last year the business was sold. The new owners are turning it into a 55+ community so only independent living. They are about 80% occupied and most of the people needing care have been moved out. The thing that hasn’t changed is the near constant calls to the fire department to come lift someone, check on the facility when a defibrillator is activated, fire, and god knows what. Our fire department is the first responder so the EMTs show up riding on a rig with sirens right past our house. The weekends are the worst. Last Saturday there were at least 4 calls, maybe 5.

We’ve started a game that has us guessing the emergency code (published on our city’s emergency website). We are so often right. If the fire truck is blaring sirens and speeding, it’s a heart problem. If they are cruising without sirens and not that quickly, someone has fallen and can’t get up.

We won’t be moving down the street when we are 55+ or older. I’m not going somewhere that advertises itself as vibrant when I’m presented with the facts there is a hot mess at the end of the street. The other retirement community in the neighborhood has zero fire trucks rolling through the neighborhood. I’m not sure how that works. Do they have a deal that includes no sirens or if it is just SO much better run? That community has a larger footprint and does include assisted living and nursing care. My point is they have a large population of sicker residents and emergency vehicles aren’t crowding the gate.

I never considered that I needed to say this. But, to be clear, who knew there were so many idiots in the world.

I am A-fucking-OK with trans people.
I am A-OK with people who have a different sexual orientation than I do.
I am A-OK with people of color.
I am A-OK with people who need a few extra minutes to express their opinion.
I am A-OK with people who need to be seen. I see you.

I wasn’t always like this. But, the older I get, the more I realize giving others the benefit of their viewpoint/lifestyle/sexual orientation/way of being is COMMON DECENCY.

That’s it. It’s not hard. You don’t have to agree with everyone’s opinion, but you have to give it grace. Even those assholes who would heckle a president during a state of the union speech. Seriously, ladies, where the fuck were you raised? But, cool, you had the opportunity to express yourself. That’s what living in America is all about. You can be an asshole and that’s OK.

In case that last paragraph undid anything for anyone. Please let me state, the following is a MUCH stronger opinion:

You Take the Good and You Take the Bad

The better-half and I got our second Pfizer shot on Thursday. We’ll be fully powered up by April 22nd. That’s the good.

The bad is last Tuesday I found out my department was decimated. Two of the senior leaders in the department were terminated. One of those senior leaders had a fancier title than I did, but we’re peers and have the same rank in our jobs framework. Two other employees were told they have 30-60 days to either find a new position internally or get the hell out. Yes, there are severance packages, but that doesn’t make any of this OK.

Honestly, it is hard for me to not be suspicious that I’ll be the next to go and whether that’s in 6 months or 12, I really believe I won’t be staying. I think once I make the transition happen and get the new world order set up, I’ll be the one getting the talk. Everything we accomplished in the last year seems to be for naught. We were more productive and made a lot of smart choices. As it turns out senior leadership had this idea in their heads for more than a year and it makes everything seem futile and dishonest.

Not Getting It

Know how sometimes someone says something to you about you that is so false that you can’t even believe it? Happened to me today. The person who said it didn’t even hear herself say it. Yes, I’m being vague.

The words were along the lines of I totally forgot that since the late 1990s you’ve been involved in training and development of adults (which, by the way means I want everyone to learn new skills) and that I once said you’ll never get a job because you don’t know technology. Nearly my entire career has been about helping people learn how to use technology so they can do their jobs better. I went back to school twice so I could hone my craft. I am in it to win it and this is the bullshit out of someone’s mouth.

I like it better when quarantine means being nice to each other.

Anyone who has read this sorry little blog for awhile knows my father is an asshole. We were at my parent’s for Thanksgiving yesterday and everything was going well. About two hours in, my father asked what time it was (6-ish). That was the signal.

As my mother was cleaning up, my father threw a snit and yelled at my twelve year-old-niece. And, he dropped the f-bomb. The house was clear in less than 5 minutes. My mother, I’m sure, had no idea what happened.

Here’s the thing…you do not get to be a jerk to the grandchildren/nieces. Period. Game Over. Go to hell.

We went to see Pink Martini on Tuesday night. A very fun show and they sang Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman and here’s how they did it:

We stayed in our seats and sang along. We left after the conga line ended up on stage during the encore.

Millennial employee got to work on time yesterday for the first time in weeks. Was I supposed to say good job or just hello?

Power went out due to Hurricane Micheal and it chafes when the people across the street have power and we don’t. Our lines are underground after a big dang production a couple of years ago. Their lines are still above ground. Ugh. Speaking of big dang deal, we’re approaching 1 year of continuous construction on the gas lines in our neighborhood. Every week we have to move signs and remove trash from the construction folks. I will be so glad when they are freaking done. At least the heavy equipment isn’t parked at our house. I’ve surely just jinxed us.
