Hearing about the massive flooding on Cape Breton makes me sad. We were just there. The photos from the last few days are horrible and it seems hard to believe we were just there driving on roads that are missing parts of themselves now.
We started and ended our trip in Halifax. On the front end of the trip we stayed downtown and on our last night spent it in a neighborhood. A neighborhood which at least one brewery (Good Robot), terrific sushi (Sushi Shiga) and a fantastic coffee shop (Lucy’s). I really enjoy walking past a Starbucks to get to a busy local place.
From Halifax we drove to PEI and were introduced to how important potatoes are on the island. We visited the Canadian Potato Museum which balanced local lore with interesting facts about how potatoes really are an excellent source of food but can be hard to grow because there are many things that can go wrong. Thank goodness for farmers, researchers and extension agents.
We had dinner at the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers and the mussels, seafood chowder and lobster were crazy good. Somehow we both also managed a piece of lemon meringue pie.
On Cape Breton we went to Baddeck Gathering Ceilidhs which was amazing. The next night the couple who played were at the pub where we were staying. The room was so cold we didn’t stay for their whole set.
