Expecting Frogs

I’m expecting a crop of bullfrogs to start falling from the sky ala Magnolia. With the rain coming down so hard and with the wind being equal parts gust and gale, I can see rain skittering down the side street. I can only imagine what our driveway looks like. After the monsoon went through a week or two ago, we ended up with canyons (I actually saw something that looked like a little waterfall) in the driveway. Who knows maybe when we get home tonight we’ll have a replica of the Snake river .

I Agree

It seems like every time I open Yahoo News there’s a report that another American soldier has been killed or wounded in Iraq. The “hostilities” are officially over…yeah.

There’s a good Op/Ed piece in the NY Times today and here’s the paragraph where I think the writer really brought his point home:

“Finally, there is an asymmetry to the administration’s use of the military in presidential events. It is wrong to bask publicly in glory on the deck of an aircraft carrier unless you are also willing to grieve openly for fallen soldiers. You can’t wrap yourself in the flag while avoiding flag-draped coffins.”

Technology Rocks

My parents are on a cruise…The Majesty of the Seas. They embarked yesterday and disembark on Thursday morning. They are in Nassau today and I know this because my mother is sending emails from the cruise ship. I knew she’d turn into a techhead sooner or later.

TCB in a FLASH!

If you checked out my first attempt at a Flash movie, I know you got a big laugh. I’m working on a “real” movie for Thanksgiving Day. I spent some time yesterday working on the art part of the movie (drawing all the different pieces of the story) and will now figure out how to animate with keyframes and other tricks. While the book I’m using has severe editing issues, it is actually helping me understand how to use Flash and I’m pretty pleased with the way the art part turned out yesterday.

I know we’re a little more than a week away, but stay tuned for a big improvement over my first attempt–which was really ridiculous .

Not So Modest Self Promotion

I’m selling stuff on ebay–my seller name is einge68. Stop everything and see what’s hot! Ok, some of those books I have no idea how I got them and some of them I’ve never read. I’ve got about 30 more that I need to put out there–the ones out there now are the lamest out of the pile.

I know, I’m shameless.

Down You Go

Sniper whoreson, how’s about a little shot in the arm?–Virginia is pro-death penalty. While I knew no one who was killed or wounded, I do live in the county where the southernmost shooting occured. The better-half is from the town where that shooting happened.

Morning Calls

Calling my house at 7:30am (or earlier) whether it be a workday or a weekend is a big No-No. You’d better be on your way to the hospital or the morgue.

Christmas Cactus-not really

Ages ago, I think perhaps when we bought our house 8 years ago, my grandmother gave me a Christmas cactus. It sat in the big window in the den and the evil kitty Tac chewed on it. The cactus had dozens of small little teeth marks in nearly all of the leaves/spines/branches/whatever they’re called. I moved the cactus to another window and it slowly healed. Never has it bloomed. I figured that the cactus was so traumatized that it would never bloom.

This summer it spent a lot of time outside getting rained on and I guess the outdoor treatment was just what it needed because it has bloomed and from the looks of it there are lots of blooms to come.

Attic Stairs

On Sunday we replaced our attic stairs. It took all afternoon because, as you can see in the picture, these aren’t those fold-up stairs. The stairs were broken when we looked at the house 8 years ago and they’ve been a pain in the arse the whole time we’ve owned the house. The door panel was held closed with a bent over nail and it was really difficult for me to pull the stairs down and then push them back into the attic without standing on a chair.

It seems so silly but we’re both thrilled that our new stairs work. The only bummer was after we finished the install I had us gather ’round our DIY list that we’re had since we moved in to cross the attic stairs off. The stairs were never on the list. Kind of a let down…but the stairs are cool.
