Sometimes Things Just Work Out

I just talked with a former co-worker who told me some information about a woman who runs the division we both used to work in and now both work with in a different capacity. The woman has been demoted and moved out of a position of power. The former co-worker and I both said, “ding, dong the witch is dead” at about the same time. There’s nothing quite like actually getting to see the whole karma thing in action.

It Started With A Faucet

When we bought our house we really wanted to do something special with our downstairs bathroom. It’s the bathroom that everyone uses and so we wanted something better than the standard cabinet and cheap-o faucet that the builder installed.

Years ago we met an artisan who made sinks and we kept her card for years thinking we’d buy one of her sinks and put it on an old cabinet. Now that everyone seems to have that idea, we’ve decided to not do it. Instead we’ve decided that we’ll paint the cabinet and install a new counter top and sink.

We also got rid of the ugliest towel rack ever:

I painted this about a year ago just to make it not so ugly. This is the back of the towel rack so you can see the original color:

Last night we ripped out the old countertop/sink–it was all one unit. And, then we carefully pulled out the cabinet. It’s weird doing demo and not being able to destroy anything. We did everything very carefully so as to minimize damage to the cabinet and to the walls. Lucky for us the backsplash of the new counter is going to cover where the old backsplash was.

Before:

After:

We weren’t going to do the floor since it extends throughout the back hallway into our laundry closet, but last night after a beer we decided now is the easiest time to redo the floor in the bathroom and leave the hallway/laundry closet for later. How hard can it be to tile a 5X7 bathroom floor? I’ll keep you posted.

My Name Is On My Shirt

Today I put on a shirt and left it un-tucked which is not something I do often but the shirt is one of those that can go either way. I really didn’t feel like wearing a belt today so I just went with the shirt un-tucked. My fashion sense just boggles the mind doesn’t it?

At some point I was fiddling with the end of my shirt and realized that my last name was written on the inside of the button placket. Darn those dry cleaners. I sort of felt like that kid at camp who had to wear clothes with her name written on them. Heck, maybe I was that kid. I flipped the end of my shirt back over as quickly as I could so as not to get beat up in the lunch room.

I walked over to campus today to work at my other computer (the one with Flash on it) and realized that there were hardly any students around. What? If it rains people don’t go to class? I can hardly blame anyone, really, since the sidewalks were loaded with water and the storm drains weren’t really draining. Any wonder that Richmond has a history of flooding?

When I got to the other building, I paused to push my rain jacket hood back (to minimize the water I’d track in) and just as I put my hand on the door knob a co-worker put the lock on. Fortunately for me, but unfortunately for him, the blinds on the door were slightly open so I could see him playing his joke. He let me in and then we laughed about how he needs to be quicker and stealthier. I’m still mulling over an appropriate response to the intended prank–pouring rain, co-worker trying to get in the door, locking door, mayhem ensues.

On This Day In History

On September 13, 1999 the moon was ripped out of Earth’s orbit because of a nuclear explosion. I guess when you store lots of nuclear product on the moon things like this might happen.

Email from the better-half

I got an email from the better-half today and this was the subject line: “Your family showed up for lunch”.

This is what he sent me:

The family was back when I got home from work. I coasted slowly into the driveway and then sat in the car for several minutes watching them.

I’m Going To Be That Neighbor

This morning I woke up before 7am because the damn crows were cawing, cawing, cawing. I shut the window closest to the bed but the damage had been done. I thought with the window shut I could wash the truck and the better-half won’t know. Then I reminded myself it wasn’t even 7 yet. Now that it is fast approaching 7:30, I think it is time to get the truck washed. I promised to do it last weekend but then we got home from vacation and had no power, a dying cat and then torrential rain. A triumvirate of bad doo-dad.

I figure the foggy conditions outside will be perfect for washing. The truck is already damp and the fog will give me some protection from all those people who walk down the road in the morning. Who am I kidding, I’m going to be that weirdo who washes cars at 7:30 in the morning.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life

So, I was admitted to graduate school. I technically have five years to finish. I’m going to talk to my advisor tonight and we’ll see how quickly he thinks I can get done.

My professor announced to everyone in my Tuesday night class that I was the newest admittee. Some folks clapped and welcomed me to the group. They, of course, had no idea that I started thinking half-way through the class that I was nuts. Then again, I’ve done plenty of nutty things in my life so this should be no different.

Leon

Leon was born in May 1990 and we didn’t meet until September of the same year. He was living at the veterinarian’s office and the staff had taken to calling him “wild man”. I couldn’t resist.

One day I came home from work and found him nearly all the way to the ceiling by way of the drapes. When I moved out of that apartment the drapes looked like a cheap version of a planetarium–when it was dark the street light shined through all those little kitty claw spots.

I was once asked if the stripe on his head was natural or not. I think I bit my tongue instead of saying that I’d drawn it on with a MarksAlot. He grew out of the stripe and stopped climbing drapes but he never lost the attitude.

He had lots of bad habits and was perturbed by nearly everyone he met. He couldn’t get enough of me and let me do most anything to him (running through that first apartment and body slamming on the bed was considered big fun). It was years after the better-half and I got married that Leon finally decided the better-half was OK. I think it is safe to say that not many people liked Leon.

Leon died yesterday afternoon and was buried with a massive amount of his favorite treats. So long, old friend.

Soon after we met:

He fell into the tank once. The fish that lived in the tank finally died after very long lives and Leon couldn’t help himself.

He stopped getting into bags at some point, but while a kitten he’d even get into the bag if he had to climb in the trash can.

He loved this green blanket that a friend’s mother knitted for me.

Leon in 2004 with his arch nemesis, Tac, in the background. They weren’t related but somehow I ended up with two white cats. Leon was actually happy (for once) when Tac died–he really didn’t like anyone.

On Returning From Vacation

We rode out Ernesto at the rental cottage. Aside from sleeping on the couches downstairs because of the terrific amount of noise the wind and rain were making bouncing off the roof and second story, the storm was fine. We missed two days of sunny weather but that’s really no big deal considering. On our way home today we saw lots of flooded homes. I sent good vibes to every house that suddenly was water-front.

We knew our power at home was out by Friday afternoon. It is still out now. The generator that we purchased after moving is finally getting used. I don’t have any real confidence that we’ll get power back by Monday. There are two spots where the power lines are a scrambled mess. And, those are only the two spots we saw after we got off the interstate. I’m sure the power company is more concerned with the bigger destruction that took place along Virginia’s coast than our little neck of the woods.

We’re also pretty sure that tonight is our cat’s last night on Earth. He hasn’t been doing well for awhile now but he is in that stage tonight where I’m just trying to make sure he’s comfortable. Leon and I have been kicking around together for sixteen years. I’ll miss him when he’s gone.
