Reason #825

We got to the office today to discover that the power was off. Just for the record–our building was the only one without power so it wasn’t like something was wrong in the area. After the power was restored, the fire alarm went off and we had to go out and sit in the parking lot for awhile. It is a great feeling to know that we’re leaving this crappy office space later this week.

Worms, Plants, Mulch

Nothing would give up life:
Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath.
- Roethke

What better way to spend a Sunday morning than planting? I’m sure some would disagree, but I believe you’ll find no better proof of a higher power than when you are outside in the morning sun digging in the dirt and listening to the wind blow through the surrounding woods.

I planted a few tiarella wherryi and a few pulmonaria “raspberry splash”.

My Bumper

I’ve been told that my bumper is quite nice (at least that is what the better half says–that’s why he’s the better half). With that said, here’s a news flash: riding my bumper isn’t going to make me go any faster.

Memory Lane

As you’ve read here before, the building I now work in for my contractor position is the building I used to work in when I worked for the Bank. I only officially worked in that building for about a year but the whole time I worked for the Bank I was only a stone’s throw from that building and was in and out of it all the time.

That building was the first time I ever had an office all to myself and it was an office with four walls that went all the way to the ceiling and a door! Can you imagine? It was in that building that my department finally gave me a raise and some respect. They were afraid I was going to leave even after the Bank was bought by a bigger Bank and they laid me off. As it turns out, sometimes when the bigger Bank lays people off they don’t really mean it because that’s when I was asked to stay and got a raise and then moved into my own office.

Because I Know You Are Dying To Know

Spring is only 4 days away, hurray!

It is chilly, rainy and dreary today but it is so hot in the office that I’m wearing a t-shirt.

The only moisture on the floor of the basement this morning was where the cat puked-at least he went downstairs.

Whitneyhouston checked herself into rehab–does she actually make music anymore or does she spend all her time getting high with her husband?

May I Have Some More?

The new commercial about the Gap’s stress-free khakis is a commercial I could watch over and over again. Woof.

It’s Beautiful, I Cried

As promised I’m posting pictures of our newly improved basement.

What the trench looked like going into the garage:

What the trench looked like with the drainage system in place:

The garage wall after the job was completed :

Where I hope to do laundry some day:

Basically, they cut a trench in our floor and then laid their patented pipe and filled with gravel. Then they applied a plastic film to the wall and then put a rigid plastic sealer over that. After all of that, they put down concrete to make our floor complete. Then, they cleaned everything up so that you can hardly tell they were there. The excellent thing is the concrete has a citrus smell to it so there’s none of “what’s that smell” going on while it cures.

You Win Some

Yesterday the basement was finished. I’ll have more about that over in the House Proud section later. I’m so excited that space will soon be really and truly ours and not something akin to a jail cell.

We worked on some of the already downed trees (thanks to Isabel-that witch) and decided that the trees that have popped their root balls should go ahead and meet the chainsaw since they’ll eventually go over. We successfully got one tree to fall in the forest (and, lo, we heard it). Another tree has been dangling a hugemongous limb over our driveway since the hurricane and we decided to tackle that tree too.

Drink my liquor, From an old fruitjar

I’ve read a boat-load of articles this week that have kind of depressed me: what Dubya did or didn’t do on the morning of Sept11; what it means to be a real Christian and not what’s being passed off these days; the bustling trade of cadavers–and that was before the recent stories broke; why dickcheney will never try to be president–he’d have to give up too much power; and, in general, articles about what’s wrong with the world.

As a reaction I thought I’d list things that are good (you may or may not agree):

Elvis songs will always make me smile
The sky is a beautiful shade of blue today
Daffodils are taking over the yard
Babysitting the Niece tomorrow night
The way my fat-as-a-house cat finds me first when he needs to feel better
Breakfast Burritos
Blood oranges are in the market
Losing weight
Good music, good friends and good food
Hearing about someone else’s good news (congrats JW on the promotion)
