Made like a Tree

John Kerry swept Super Tuesday and this morning there is nary a trace of his local office in the building.

Speaking of leaving this building we’re moving out as well. You may ask how we could leave a building where some of the time there’s no soap in the bathrooms, the elevators sometimes don’t work, the HVAC works only on the Hot setting, our parking space gets taken a lot and our neighbors yell down the hallway. It will be hard to do but I’m sure we’ll muddle through somehow.

The extra good news about the new location is that it is about 15 minutes from our house (and hardly anything is 15 minutes from our house). And, we’ll have our own bathroom. No soap? No problem, I’ll go to the store and get some.

Destruction

Over the weekend we spent lots of time completing the demolition in the basement and garage. We needed to get the shelving unit out of the girl’s side of the garage (yes, we have a boy’s side and a girl’s side) because it was up against the wall that B-Dry needs to work on next week.

The interesting thing about the shelving unit is that it was put together with pegs. We can only assume that the shelving unit was a kit because who would make all those pegs by hand and ensure that they fit the appropriate openings? Certainly not the people who owned our house before us. Those people wired an extension cord into the house’s electrical system. Yes, you heard me correctly–an extension cord went up through a hole in our bathroom closet to an electric box in our attic. Not very bright those folks.

The basement was mostly prepped before B-Dry even came out for the consultation but we did finish removing trim and disconnected the old decrepit electric baseboard heaters. There’s nothing as satisfying as swinging one of these around a room that you’ve come to loathe. I can hardly wait to take on the ugliness that is our kitchen.

The only things we have to do before the work begins is to take the door that separates the garage and the basement down and unhook the washer and dryer. It should take us about an hour to do that next Wednesday night.

I’m a little excited that the basement is finally going to be dry.

The Answer is Yes

As you may know, The Niece is originally from China. My sister and her husband brought her home over a year ago. The Niece is going to be 2 this month. She has lived here in A-Mur-ica for most of her life.

Here’s the news flash: She speaks English.

I can’t imagine the questions my sister gets if I’m still getting the “Does she speak English?” question.

Shopping or Something

My sister, The Niece and I went shopping today and we bought hardly anything. The Niece got a cute new bathing suit and I got a set of lamps from IKEA. I’ve been searching for lamps forever…really, it has been ages and I found some at IKEA. It figures that the store that has what I want is more than 50 miles away. While we were doing a quick rendition of does this shade look good with this style of lamp, a woman walked by and said “that’s cute” and so I knew I’d hit pay dirt. When a stylish woman who doesn’t live in the sticks gives you a “that’s cute” you have to go with it. At least that’s what I’m going to say if the better-half doesn’t like the lamps.

Scratching My Head

I seem to be scratching my head a lot these days.

The House has passed a bill that says it isn’t one murder but two if you kill a pregnant woman. How can this legislation be considered if it is still ok to have an abortion? Is it different because during an abortion only the fetus dies? And, how pregnant does a woman have to be before it is considered a double-homicide? Does this mean that any female of child-bearing age who is murdered in this country will have to be autopsied to find out if she was pregnant at time of death?

The Basement will B-Dry

We met with someone from B-Dry this morning and we’re scheduled to have the work done to our basement in a couple of weeks. I’m thrilled. That means we can finally start using that space down there and it means I’m one step closer to having the washer and dryer in the basement instead of the garage.

B-Dry has a solution to save one of our window wells down there and while the actual window itself will eventually be replaced it is great to know that we’ll have some natural light in an otherwise dark corner. The corner will be a laundry/exercise room some day.

The garage wall that is below grade will also be treated and we’ll have a gravity drain so no worries with sump pump locations or what happens if we lose power. The brilliant thing about the gravity drain is that its cost and the cost for the sump pump are identical…the gravity drain needs no maintenance or replacement–unless, of course, we lose gravity. Which would really suck.

The Next Time I Fly

I hope the next time I fly that I don’t find myself a victim of a full cavity search because I signed both of these e-petitions.

Thanks to nobody’s doll and bitchypoo (check them out in the links section).

Sitting Too Close

We walked over to Su Casa today for lunch and ended up at one of the little tables for 2 in the middle of the floor. The only issue with the little tables for 2 is that you are crushed next to other tables of 2. The table for 2 next to us yammered on and on about work and how some loser who works for the two marketing/sales lunchers was treading on some thin ice. It felt kind of weird to hear about how that slacker had better shape up or he was going to find a slip of pink on his desk. One of the yammers was a woman whom I’m sorry to say would annoy the ever-living out of me if I worked with her. I’m all for girl power but I could only think her lunch buddy was thinking “yeah whatever toots could you shut up so I can eat” because that’s what I was thinking. I hope that doesn’t make me a traitor to my kind.

Sex and the City

His name is John? I couldn’t help but laugh.

How come either the MIL or my mother calls nearly every single time we try to watch the show? We started taping on Sunday nights because the MIL would invariably call and tonight my mother called. What is it about that show that draws the ‘rent into the scene?

So long S&TC.
