Is it time for bed yet?

Central Va has been experiencing crazy hot temps for the past 6 days or so. I’ve complained about this before, I know. I’m just not done with the whine. Last night the humidity must have easily been 90%. It never got cool. To top it off for awhile the moon was out and very, very bright. Thankfully some clouds came and blocked the fast approaching full moon.

Around 10pm I was on the couch reading a copy of The Atlantic Monthly from June–we’re a little backed up on the magazines. I dozed off and decided to go to bed. I’m not talking about falling asleep on the couch with my mouth open, snoring, while the magazine slips to the floor. I’m talking I blinked off a couple of times and decided that I must be tired and I should go to bed.

I could not get comfortable. The better-half was working late and that usually means that I can get some strong sleep in before he gets home. I am not a power-sleeper so getting to the place where I stay asleep when he comes home and gets into bed is something I strive to do. I think I dozed for a little while and then woke up. I was wide awake at 1am and stayed wide awake until I finally got up and went back to the couch at 2:20. The better-half was sound asleep by then. By that time, I was pretty worked up. If I can’t sleep, I start poring over stupid crazy stuff. That’s not exactly counting sheep.

It was cooler in the den because the door to the screened porch was open but the sky had a weird glowy pall. I bet I got 2 or 3 hours of sleep last night, tops. It certainly didn’t help that around 5:30 a sharp stabbing pin-prick of pain attacked one of my big toes. I can only assume a mosquito and I have news bug—Saturday is only supposed to be mid-50s. Bite now because you are about to Bite It.

The Machine Has Started

I just saw my first commerical for Holiday decorating–the marketing machine is in full throttle. You can get all kinds of items at Big Lots to decorate your house this Christmas. I don’t know what you’ll do if you celebrate Ramadan or Hanukah or any other non-Christan holiday.

My Mouth is Agog

I’m flabbergasted by what people think they are entitled to especially when it comes to family. We’ve received phone calls over the past couple of months from family members who have problems with their computers. Note: if you are reading this and we’ve helped you with your PC before, ignore this rant.

The last time we saw any of these people was January or February. Not so much as a kiss my ass or anything from them. Until, of course, their computer fails. We DO NOT repair computers for a living (which, if we did, means your phone calls would get under my craw even more). We use them just like, nearly, everyone else. So, if you’d like to PAY for the service then get out your wallet and cough up the cash…it ain’t cheap because you will be paying either the software development or the consulting rate. Neither of those rates will make you happy.

My advice: get out the yellow pages and find someone in your area who repairs computers for a living. If you want to chat with us or visit with us, let us know and we’re happy to do that.

Voting Makes Me Feel Corny

So I voted bright and early this morning. The polling place is about 2 miles from my house in a small Presbyterian church. We used to vote at the community center but for whatever reason the church now gets the voting business (and, yes, I’m aware of how weird it is to vote in a church). The ballot didn’t really have any issues to speak of only lots and lots of people running unopposed. We were presented with 2 nominees for the Soil and Water Conservation Board. I’ve never heard of either of the people but one person’s last name was Wells. To misquote the better-half what better person to be in charge of Water than someone named Wells. I also voted for the incumbent Supervisor and gave the shaft to the guy who came out to chat me up about his vote. In a stunning campaign move the challenger created some of the worst posters and put them on Stop signs all around. I swear there are better posters for Class President in Elementary schools.

Anyway, as I was driving to the gas station (7-11 on Pole Green Road has gas for $1.35!!!) I felt the power of the people surge through me. I always feel like I’m part of something greater right after I vote. By the time I was finished pumping gas I was done with that feeling and threw away all the propaganda I was handed on my way into the polling place.

Now I’m reminded that next year’s election has me dazed and confused. I voted for Dubya the first time around but I’m not going to do it again. I suppose I should start checking out the Dems and see what any of them have to offer. I could go downstairs and visit with the Kerry people on the first floor–maybe not.

Flash-Not Gordon

I’m trying to teach myself Flash so that I can create some cool movies for our website…which means that I’ll probably throw some god-awful movie out here on F&G for you to ridicule and shriek over. I am taking the Lessons that ship with Flash and I have to tell you they are BORING, HUMDRUM and LIFELESS. It seems to me that if Flash is used to make movies, couldn’t the Lessons use that technology? I ordered SAMS Teach Yourself Flash in 24 hours and am waiting for that to come in. Hopefully, that book will help me be more productive.

Another work-related topic: I’m going to be doing a project for VDSS starting in Jan and running through March. Yes, L.P, if you are reading that it must be true since it is in print now. 20 hours a week to help get the new release’s Help files in order. Maybe some work on training materials too. The odd and strange thing is this: they are moving into the building I once worked in when I worked for the bank. I’ll be back in the old haunts. At least I’ll know where all the bathrooms are.

On the River Again

The better-half and I finished building the new Joad (the canoe carrier) and we went canoeing yesterday for the first time in a couple of years. The Mattaponi river between Zoar and Aylett was high and brisk. We spent a lot of time just holding onto the paddles and not doing any work. The river carried us. Because it was about 80 yesterday we were in t-shirts and shorts so except for the leaves it felt like we were canoeing in May. There was a guy and his son on one of those evil jet skis–they were wearing bathing suits. There’s nothing more disgusting than having your peaceable journey interrupted by a jet ski. I don’t see the point.

We saw a couple of Great Blue Herons, a duck, tons of squirrels and heard a few owls. We’re pretty sure some turtles were out as well but we didn’t see them–only heard them slipping into the water as we went by.

We were able to eat our lunch without pulling over to the bank which is not something we usually do. But since the river was pulling us so much we really only had to make sure we didn’t get sideways while we ate our sandwiches.

There were lots of people taking advantage of the weather at the Aylett boat ramp. The fishing area was fairly populated but the parking lot was full of trucks and boat trailers. I guess folks figured fishing was a better idea than watching a game on TV. We didn’t see any power boats and we usually don’t…they tend to head towards Walkerton and the fatter water. I imagine though from Aylett to Walkerton there was plenty of water traffic. We don’t do that run very often because it takes longer and you have to pay attention to the tide or you end up exhausting yourself paddling.

Stick a Fork In Me

This is the lamest damn thing I’ve ever heard of–leave it to the Brits to mock it though. Good beer and a cutting sense of humor–my kind of place.

When I worked in a bookstore right after graduation we used to sneer (yes, we were book snobs) at kids who would come in and head straight for the Cliff Notes. We sold those because the owner/manager was an idiot and he was in the family business because it was a family business not because he actually opened a book. Anyway, where was I?

Oh yeah, making up some cock and bull about reading too much. That’s just great–make reading scary. It is scary because you may actually find yourself smart enough to figure out that you should question authority sometimes…heaven forbid should we do that.

November starts Saturday

I know Virginia weather is weird sometimes but give me a freakin’ break…

So much for breaking out the sweaters and hearty soups.

The Guitar Pull

We went to the Mary-Chapin Carpenter/Shawn Colvin/Dar Williams/Patty Griffin concert and it was cool. They sat on stage in a row and went round and round playing songs–some were their own compositions and some were covers. Mary-Chapin’s dog Mona was on stage for most of the show. Mary-Chapin opened with Johnny Cash’s “I Still Miss Someone”. It was quite moving. Some of their songs were quite poignant and others were pretty darn funny. One of the encore songs was a duet of Mary-Chapin and Shawn Colvin doing a BackStreet Boys song. Since I’m not a fan of the boy band I don’t know which song it was (something about loving deep) but we were laughing and the women on stage were laughing.

I was fairly pleased with the crowd. As you may know, the folks of this fair city get all liquored up at shows and then proceed to shout through concerts. This really wasn’t the case last night. One person’s cell went off and Mary-Chapin asked them to give themselves a thrill and put it on vibrate. One person told them to just play (there was quite a bit of chatter on the stage throughout–all of it entertaining) and the 4 of them got a little uppity on that yokel.

Patty Griffin plays a mean guitar.

For dinner we had planned on getting pizza at Piccola’s but it was crammed so we walked down the street and found Cafe Mandolin. It was expensive. I got the grilled shrimp wrapped in pancetta and it was $20. There were 4 shrimp on the plate. I’m all for little restaurants with big flavors charging me for their creativity in the kitchen. 4 shrimp does not equal $20. The better-half wanted to get the pork tenderloin but the waiter asked the chef if that could be done in the time we had and instead he got the salmon-which he said was pretty yummy. We both had the potato and leek soup which was excellent. The chef came out after our dinner and apologized for saying we shouldn’t order the pork. She said she could have done it in time had she realized what time it was (doesn’t wear a watch). She gets points for that. We told her everything we had was delicious.

We got home around 11:30 and I stood on the front steps for about 10 minutes looking for the aurora to no avail.

I had to come back into this entry to add this little piece of information. The people in front of us at the concert last night brought their infant. Their child was a fairly recent addition to the planet so luckily it was asleep for most of the show. Hey, Mom & Dad, taking brand-new Jr. to a concert isn’t such a good idea.
