Hotmail Preview

I just watched the Preview for the new and improved Hotmail. That is one slick learning tool. Too bad there is no way to tell the people who developed that preview how great I think it is. Oh wait, I know they are swarming this site!

It really is a good tool covering the basics in an easy to understand show and tell format. How I wish we could have had the right tools to develop something like that. Instead we used PowerPoint. Alas, it worked pretty well, but it was never that slick or that professional.

Canoe, Canoe, Canoe

Last year we canoed not once. No rain=no water in the Mattaponi. This year we haven’t been because we’ve been busy and we bought a new truck at the end of 2001 and needed to build a new rack to carry said canoe. We built a new rack last weekend and would like to go out in the canoe before the canoe gets off its rack in the garage and walks out due to neglect. The problem is this…if the water is running too fast on the Mattaponi we can’t go because we’re not crazy. And, since Isabel and then the tornado that ripped through left trees over everywhere we’re not sure if the route is clear or not. We’ve always had to do the limbo or the duck to get under trees before but I’m not interested in portage for any great distance especially in late October/early November. We can check flow by either visiting the put-in or take-out place to see how the water is running. What we can’t check is if there are a gazillion trees over the river.

I did what any rational person would do I checked on the internet to find out if the eco-tour dude that we’ve met plenty of times at the put-in place has updated his website. You know he knows if the route is clear enough for some canoeing. It is his business. Apparently, though he updates his website once in a blue moon. He hasn’t updated since May. It is still spring in his website universe. I hate to tell anyone what to do (yeah right, I love to do that) but if you run a company that is dependent on the river then perhaps you want to update your website. If I were a prospective customer I might want to know if you can even lead tours before I waste my time calling you to arrange a trip. At the same time I feel bad in even thinking of calling him to find out if the river is clear because I’ll probably never-ever use his service.

Me’Shell Ndegeocello

I have Me’Shell’s “Plantation Lullabies” and really like it and I have a pretty funny story about playing the song “If that’s your Boyfriend” at work one time. Did I ever mention that I once worked in HR for a rather staid bank? Imagine pin-striped managers and that song–you get the picture.

Anyway, I heard the song “Beautful” the other night on TV and didn’t realize it was her but I found it on MusicMatch and now I can’t stop listening to it. It makes we want to do things that I can’t write about here because there’s a slight chance this could be the day my mother finds this website. At the same time it makes me look inward and go to the things that are bothering me and turn them over and over in my head. Interesting that it makes two completely different things go on in my head.

What drew me to Me’Shell in the first place was her bass playing. What is keeping me listening is her voice. “Beautiful” is beautiful. I know I’m not covering any new ground here but I love that music makes so much go on inside your head. Am I making any sense?

Hurts My Heart

Check out this article about a girl gone wrong. It is sad and sobering.

Interesting

Ok, I had to ban another IP. Sucks for you 212.219.232.16 but don’t put crap on my site.

Yesterday I had exactly 0 email in my “real” email account. I can’t count high enough to tell you how much ended up in my hotmail account. I don’t think I’ve ever had 0 in my “real” account. If I get 0 today then something is wrong…cosmically.

Yesterday I didn’t go to work because I wanted to stain some porch furniture. I knew we were going to have days and days of breezy and dry weather to help it dry. I know, what a lame excuse for not going to work, but it is the truth. While I was staining, one of the candidates for Supervisor came by to give me his spiel. He’s the guy I’m not going to vote for and I knew that when he got out of his truck.

Questions I wanted to ask but didn’t:
1) Aren’t you the guy who lived in Brandy Creek Estates back in the 70s who hid live ordinance in an empty lot? When my friends and I found it our parents freaked–were you that teenager?

2) Why doesn’t your truck have a county tag on it or a front license plate? You aren’t using your business vehicle for campaigning are you?

3) Why did some of the propaganda you gave me about your opponent look like you’d done a really piss-poor job with the PhotoShop or the white-out?

4) Why did you refer to Old Church like it is where you live when you clearly don’t live in the area? Yes, obviously, you live in the appropriate location to run for Supervisor but you don’t live in Old Church so shut up about what you know about Old Church. And, if you are that guy with the live ordinances then I know you didn’t live here as a kid.

5) Were you wearing makeup?

Concerts

We have a slew of concert tickets tacked to the bulletin board in our home office. First up is a 4 artist concert (Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams and Patty Griffin). I’ve seen Mary Chapin and Shawn before and really hope Shawn does Wichita Skyline. The other two I like but have never seen live. I think it will be a great show.

The next one is Lyle Lovett. We’ve seen him before too but the time we saw him the venue was so hot that I actually had to fight a nap-attack. I know, can you believe it? Our seats are better this time (not near the back wall) so I’m looking for a wide-awake good time.

Then we see John Mayer. We’ve seen him before too and he gives a pretty darn good live performance. It doesn’t matter that I’m a good 10 years older than his target audience (based on what we saw last summer). I’m particularily thrilled though about this concert because The Thorns are opening. The Thorns ROCK. I really think they have one of the best new albums this year.

Before you go thinking that I’m only about the folksy folk, I was listening to Oakenfold’s Tranceport today while dusting.

The Basement

About a month ago we decided to tear out the walls in our basement. It is a damp and musty place. And, lo and behold, the basement has been drier ever since we ripped out the paneling and the wallboard. I know it hasn’t rained much but it hardly oozed a drop during the hurricane. I’d say that’s progress.

We’re going to either put a sealer on ourselves or contract someone to do it. I think we’re leaning to contracting someone since we want longer than the 5-year guarantee that we found on the sealer can. I’m not sure what a contractor will want to do but I’m really interested in actually using that space down there. It isn’t well heated and there isn’t any air conditioning down there so our work is cut out for us. The only thing we use it for is the litter box (actually the cats use it for that purpose), exercising and we play the occasional game of pool.

Anyway, you didn’t want to hear me ramble on about what might be. You want pictures of destruction. I’ve got them for you. The first picture is of the nasty drop ceiling that half of the basement had (truly the dropped ceiling stopped half-way across the span of the basement). The better-half hated it and it came down pretty easily. Oh, you can see the swinging paneling in this shot too.

The next picture is a shot of how nasty the walls were behind the paneling. That thing standing up is a crappy electric heater.

I used the shop vac down there last week and sucked some of the efflorescence off the walls. It doesn’t look nearly as bad as the picture now that it has dried out and that stuff is off the walls.

The interesting thing about ripping out the walls and ceiling was that we finally got the answer to our suspicion that part of the basement was once another room. We have an extra door in our garage and it is painted the same color as some of the old trim in the basement. But, the puzzler is why the room was never finished and why it was ripped out before we bought the house.

Did I ever mention that the guy living in our house before we bought it (from his brother) only lived in the basement? He only went upstairs to use the bathroom and the coffee pot. I lie not.

I stand corrected

Yesterday I said something about what a rip-off Ukrop’s Great Holiday Giveaway is this year as contrasted to other years. I erroneously said that a pineapple cost $4. I’m sincerely sorry because as I found out today they cost $4.99. Now it is so worth it.

New car model

I think I’ve come up with a great new automobile idea (or at least a good name)… the 2005 Mitsubishi Tarrantino.

It (randomly) commits acts of unutterable violence on pedestrians, other vehicles, and occupants.

Look for the car with “Bad Ass M– F–” on it :-)

Schmukrops

Ok, so if you are from Richmond you know the Ukrop’s own the grocery store market. You also know that every year they have a year-end giveaway based on how much you spend. Every freaking year we spend enough for a free turkey–a decent sized turkey (12-15lbs). This year their Great Giveaway is a BIG FREAKING RIP-OFF. Bite me…a $4 pineapple if I spend $500-$849 at your store?
