Shrimp Curry

Last night I made my version of shrimp curry. I can’t say that my version is all that different than every recipe you’ve probably seen for shrimp curry. Last night was the first time I’ve ever made the dish and I think a few tweaks might be in order. It was tasty, but there were two complaints at the table, which could be easily remedied. I served it over Texmati rice. I suppose jasmine rice would have been nice, but we had the Texmati.

I used a can of light coconut milk, some red curry paste, brown sugar, fish sauce, shrimp, green beans, red bell pepper and topped the curry with thinly sliced lemongrass and serrano pepper. I was too lazy to walk out to the garden to pick some basil leaves and I really should have gotten my butt in gear. I missed the taste of basil.

The better-half didn’t like the rawness of the green beans–they only cooked for 5 minutes. So I think next time I’ll blanch those for a few minutes and then throw them into the pan with everything else.

To recap: go get the basil and cook those green beans a little longer.

Figs!

For dessert tonight with some others tucked away for tomorrow:
home figs

The flower fell off our Streptocarpus. It looked pretty and so joined the figs.

At least that’s taken care of

We bought a car at the end of last week. It’s fancier than we originally thought but it’s not wacky-doodle fancy. We did well on the trade-in and had a good experience at the dealership. I like the car and it won’t (knock wood) leave me on the side of a major highway in the coming weeks.

I read a book at my desk last week and I brought in another one to read for the next few days. I’m taking leave every week now and I suspect my leave taking will ramp up in September. I have a ridiculous amount of leave. More than I can use.

I have an interview on Wednesday but I’m really not feeling it. So much depends on whether or not an organization will be relaxed with me finishing my school work. It’s been so nice working for a university because it’s all about education. I’m not sure that will translate to other organizations. And, the Wednesday interview spot has already told me they’ve decided to cap the salary so the job may not even pay more than what I earn now. I know I’m lucky to be employed, but I haven’t had a raise in years. I don’t know that I want to even consider a job that starts off screwing me on salary.

The co-worker and the supervisor are still playing the weirdo game. I honestly don’t understand the beef my co-worker has with our supervisor, but it’s seriously awkward. 33 working days and counting.

Zip, Nada, Nuthin’

Work: nothing going on. Seriously, I cruise the internet all day and I’m nearly done with a book that I started over a year ago. Tax dollars at work. But, hey, our client can’t get its act together so I’m taking up space and that’s it. Only 38 working days to go.

Car: dying a slow death by crappy transmission. I thought Hondas were supposed to go, go, go until they spontaneously combust at age 4,000. Yeah, not Accords from 2003 with over 140K on them. I know. It has a ton of miles on it and it should be tired by now.

Garden: finally figured out it was the crows eating all the tomatoes. The netting has completely stopped that and I harvested 6 tomatoes last night.

Education: am so tired of correcting people about the degree (DEGREE–a freaking degree program that’s 60 credit hours, for the love of God) that I’m working on. It is not a PhD and it is not a certificate. I’ve just stopped correcting people. Because most everyone who is confused are at work and I’ve explained it 50 bazillion times. And, like I said there are 38 working days left.

Chunky Salsa Win!

I had this idea that I’d make a rustic, chunky salsa to go with the grass-fed NY Strip last night. The tomatoes, garlic, herbs and the banana and serrano peppers are from our garden. I added some olive oil, salt and pepper. Haven’t quite figured out how to grow/manufacture those.

The salsa turned out very nice but the steak was mediocre. It’s the second one we’ve had and either we just don’t like grass-fed beef or that was one ancient cow because those steaks were tough and completely not worth whatever we paid. But, hey, that salsa!

We took the wrong train to kingdom come

Content has been light because it has just seemed like so much work. Between beginning the summer with three classes and the job situation sucking so hard, I just haven’t felt like doing jack.

The classes are over and the next two don’t start until late August. The job situation is really THE ENERGY SUCK. We’re down to less than 46 days until the doors shut. And, as you can tell from the previous entry the craziness has really ramped up. I had two nagging headaches this week and I’m sure it’s because of the insanity.

I had what I thought was a sure thing lined up at another university (three interviews, a presentation, references checked), but it fell through. The other finalist was a better fit. The funny thing? When the recruiter called to tell me, she said she hoped the news didn’t ruin my vacation. I’m surprised she couldn’t see my eyes roll through the phone. Really? I waited all year for a week at the beach and your bad decision is not going to ruin my vacation. Gawd.

Now, I’m back to the search. I made my resume public yesterday on monster.com and this morning I had way too many emails about sales jobs. Got to love those ‘bots that just generate emails in response to any new resume. Also, someone called me by the masculine of my name. That email went straight to the junk mail cesspool. Don’t worry, monster isn’t the only place that has my resume.

I’ve applied for a few jobs that I know are over my head, but I figured why the hell not. I also applied for a position at a place that sells one of my favorite things in the whole world (booze). Maybe that will work out so I can get a discount and really pickle my liver.

I think I might be in 8th grade

Two days back from vacation and I would do pretty much anything to go back.

My co-worker is being secretive and weird. I’m pretty sure she and our boss maybe spent 15 minutes together last week while I was gone. Apparently, I’m the glue. Who knew.

The co-worker bought a car (used) but she doesn’t want our boss to know she bought it (no idea). Today as I was leaving the parking lot, I noticed the new car was over in the other part of the lot. Hiding. Poor car is caught in some 8th grade drama.

My boss was offered a job at a crazy significant decrease in pay and hasn’t told my co-worker. See? It’s all about the 8th grade.

Today, I worked like a fiend and now have a headache. I used to get headaches in junior high too. Wonder if there’s a connection.

Doing the right thing

Today I’m at the office alone (meaning my unit isn’t here) and I’ve been whipping through some work. I noticed that a significant portion of policy that our client posts to their public website was redirecting to some other place.

I was feeling generous and so emailed the person who manages that program to let her know. She called me and proceeded to ask me if I wanted a part-time job with her unit working on a high-level policy project. It was flattering but at the same time INSANE. She said I have a good reputation and that she knew I could take care of the work. I politely declined but promised I’d think about it.

I got off the phone and laughed my head off. I am so not that person. But, I knew someone who might be and she’s now making a connection to find out if she could work on that project. I really hope it works out for her because she has years of experience and knows that part of policy thoroughly. Unlike me.

After the phone conversation, I got an email from the program manager saying she’d passed the problem to a middle manager who is in charge of that stuff. Since that person was copied in the email, I pointed out another rather embarrassing gaffe and said please see this page because that’s out there for all the world to see. Middle manager said, “Oh that’s not really a problem, we’re waiting to put in links once other projects get finished”. Clearly she didn’t read my email because the problem is within that which is already posted. Hello, Ms. Peter Principle. It’s nice to meet you.
