Licking Envelopes

I just finished paying a couple of bills and licked the envelopes shut.* I’m getting over a cold and I just licked the envelopes. Those envelopes are now slathered in germs. I know germs only live so long in the world, but it made me think about what other people may use to seal envelopes and I was a little grossed out.

*Yes, we still pay some bills the old fashioned way.

E Equals MC Squared

The better-half and I watched this last night (I know, we’re wild and crazy on the weekends) and it was better than good. If you can catch it on a repeat showing, I highly recommend it.

Nothin’ but blue skies do I see

The sun is out and the sky is blue. That’s major news around here. We went from no rain to rain and then drizzle for a week. The grass which had turned crackly and brown has rebounded and is once again leggy and brilliant green. If the trees could just start losing their leaves, it would start looking a bit more like Fall. At least the temperatures have moderated.

Yesterday I left work early because Typhoid Mary did, in fact, pass her cold on to me. When I told her I was leaving yesterday she looked surprised that I said she had successfully passed her cold on and that she should feel better by the end of the day. She wondered if I was experiencing problems with sinus pressure. She’s one of those Boomers who likes to take the credit for a job well done but passes the buck when the job involves gobs of snot.

Last night I watched The Haunting. I’ve seen it before and it creeped me out again. It is one of the best horror movies ever. Psychological and loud bumps in the night. It was on Turner Classic Movies On Demand so the movie was framed by Robert Osbourne. He has a magnificent voice.

Could It Just Be The Weekend Already?

This has been one long week. Remember back in school Thursday nights brought in some of the best parties? I could use that about now. Instead we’re going to run a couple of errands and then have dinner at a place that has turned their October menu over to Oktoberfest. The better-half went there last week and has just stopped talking about the sauerbraten. I wonder what will be his fancy tonight.

Tomorrow night the better-half is going out with some friends so it will be me, the couch, the remote and a bowl of popcorn. I’m hoping for a spooky movie. Something from the era when movies were shot in black & white, sound and music effects were what’s creepy and gore shots were non-existent.

Typhoid Mary

I sit next to Typhoid Mary. I’ve worked here since March and this person is sick at the drop of a hat–seriously she’s been sick at least three times since March. And, she’s one of those people who apparently doesn’t take anything OTC because she sniffles and sighs all day long. Oh the sighing. The sighing is about to kill me.

As a bit of self-disclosure, I have allergies that are with me all year long. I’m a little more allergic at different times but for the most part I can count on having to blow my nose frequently. The crazy and wacky thing I do though is I take something for the runny nose and the whole breathing thing. I don’t sniffle and sigh all day. Did I mention the sighing?

Go home already.

Better Than Silk

Today Leon’s fur feels especially luxuriant. I don’t really know why the texture of his hair changes but it does. He mostly eats the same darn food over and over again so I doubt the change is dietary. Perhaps he’s been really good about cleaning today or it is the cool crisp air. Anyway, he’s so soft and he knows it. He won’t stop coming back for the lovin’ and I won’t stop petting him.

We didn’t do any of the cool things we thought about doing over the weekend, but we did get the room the better-half uses as a home office cleaned up and looking a little less like a sh*tstorm. Some day we’ll (we meaning me) paint in there and then it really will be done. I watched nearly all of Fried Green Tomatoes on Saturday even though the length of and the sheer number of commercials was staggering. As embarrassing as it is to admit that movie always gets to me.

Numbers Game

There’s a house for sale in our neighborhood that is very much like ours. The other house is siding, ours is brick, they have a full bath downstairs and we have a half. They have a paved driveway and we have gravel. Otherwise pretty close to the same house. The other house is 2 years older than ours. Because I need to know things, I looked up the house on the internet and lo! They are asking about 79K more than we paid for our house in December of 2004. If they get that price, I’ll be amazed but pleased.

We just looked at our 10 day forecast and what is up with the high 70s, low 80s? Dude, it is the middle of freaking October. Enough with the heat already.

A Little of This

Last night I had dinner with some friends and afterwards I went to Kroger. They had a ton of the Botan Rice candy. So, I’ve been looking for something for years and now it’s everywhere. I bought 4 boxes. Kroger was selling it for less than a dollar. The other store for a little over a dollar. At least it is still as tasty as I remember. Very orangey.

I also got some Halloween candy while I was out last night. This is the first year I’ve purchased candy for us to give out at our house. When we lived in the old house there was never a trick or treater in the eight Halloweens we were there.

I also got a cheap string of pumpkin lights to decorate the front porch. I hope kids show up. Otherwise there will be a ton of gummy body parts going down my gullet.

The best news yet is that it is finally raining in Virginia. Not only did we have the second warmest summer in recorded history, we also had the driest September. I let the shower run this morning. Bliss.

The National Folk Festival is playing in Richmond this weekend. And, if that wasn’t enough fun, there’s an Oktoberfest at the Raceway complex. Even with the rain, I think we may venture out for some of the Folk Festival. I’m not so sure about the Oktoberfest. It sure beats spending $25 to go to our neighborhood’s block party. $25 to hang around with people I don’t know and don’t want to know. I think I’d rather spend my cash going to a larger cultural event and eating something other than soggy hot dogs and limp potato chips.

My 30 Year Search Is Over

Once when I was a small child (less than 8), one of my aunts gave me a piece of candy while I was sitting on the back steps. It was a sunny day and she had just walked out of our utility room. She told me that it was special candy from very far away and I could eat the wrapper. Eat the wrapper?

I ate the wrapper and I remember the candy was good. I remember the candy was orange. I remember there was a certain texture to it. I’ve remembered the whole scene for more than 30 years. I’ve never seen that candy since. Until last night.

She’s Damaging My Calm

Joss Whedon will you please keep making Serenity movies? The story was compelling and the dialogue witty. The better-half said after the movie was over that he missed watching the show every week. Me too.

Speaking of movies, while we were in the theater last night, I realized for a goodly amount of time I was the only woman in the audience. Then my sci-fi sisters rolled in just before the trailers. All told there were still way more men watching the movie then women.
