Just a Lil Bit

If you can’t go to Florida then go to Home Depot twice…that’s what I always say. In addition to hanging out at Home Depot, we had dinner with The Niece and her parents at Moe’s. The Niece was crazy insane and placed our orders for us. Then she and I had a discussion about the $20 bill the better-half gave her to pay for our dinner. We went from Andrew Jackson to the fact that we need to take her to Washington, DC–there’s a zoo there, don’t you know. The Niece didn’t know that but she did tell me that we need to take her to DC sometime.

After dinner we went to the new Bruster’s for ice cream. I managed not to get purple ice cream in my hair which was remarkable since The Niece was sitting on my shoulders. She got down just before the heavy ice cream dripping started. Here’s a little “good to know” item…when a three year old is unhappy giving her a quarter will totally cheer her up. It pays to keep quarters or cookies on hand should the situation arise. Consider yourself advised.

Passing The Test

I meant to tell this story at the end of June because that’s when it happened but I was so worn out by the end of that week of June that I just couldn’t do it. Gather ’round children, it’s story time.

At work there is an unspoken rule that you do not involve the editors until you absolutely have to involve them because they have been known to get creative with the text instead of just making sure the commas are correct and we’re not infringing on copyrights. I may omit commas on occasion but I have found many a mis-spelled word in courses I’ve read. So, I’m a little confused about what editor really means.

Not Going

We’re not going on the trip this weekend. I’m at work instead. Something is totally amiss when you are at work instead of on vacation. My sisters and I are attempting a reschedule and I hope that works out.

I was glad to hear that Londoners are back on the Tube this morning. The best revenge is to carry on.

I’m sorry there’s not much to say today. I’m exhausted from not sleeping last night. Thanks to a middle of the night phone call that amounted to nothing but a snit on my part. I rage against the machine and the machine rolls over and goes back to sleep. I get up and read for several hours. Such is life.

Go, No Go

We’re in the wait and see portion of the Sister trip. Hopefully we’ll be heading to FL even if there is some rain forecast. I don’t mind a little rain but I don’t want to get down there and get told to turn right around and head home.

Turning right round…reminds me that the idiot stupor has once again taken over quite a few drivers and a couple of university police. The light was green and a police officer on foot stood in the middle of the road to talk to an officer in a car. I had to swing wide to avoid the pedestrian cop and there was a whole line of cars behind the auto-cop. Finally the auto-cop pulled into a side street…gee, what a good idea.

Just In Time For Our Trip

Wouldn’t you know that a storm would brew up just in time for the Sister trip? My sister in FL sent an email today saying we’ll have to wait and see about visiting her this coming weekend. My other sister and I leave on Friday morning to head down to New Smyrna Beach. I wish everyone in the path of Dennis much luck and if they could push it further out into the Gulf, I’d be mighty appreciative.

Piers Part One

Here’s our progress. The better-half will finish this week. That thing in the background is a hammock stand. I hope to get some time in that thing soon.

Happy Fourth

We’re having some people over this afternoon and all but one party has called to confirm. Because we’re so untrustworthy that we always invite people over and then leave just before they are due to arrive (eyes are rolling).

We’re not doing the typical backyard barbecue today. We will be leaning heavily on the grill though. Last night we stayed up past my bedtime and prepped everything. We have lamb and pork marinating in a greek marinade, chicken marinating in mustard, garlic and rosemary. We hard boiled some eggs for deviled eggs. They just need to be put together this afternoon.

We made two pasta salads. One with regular pasta and one with gluten-free pasta. Both have tomatoes, fire-roasted red pepper, olives, fresh parsley, garlic and olive oil. I’ll add some feta later today. We also mixed up our version of tsatziki (it was the quick version without draining the yogurt). And, we’ll be grilling some potatoes and vegetables as well.

We’ll be shooting off some fireworks later in the front yard since the backyard is torn apart with the porch project. Speaking of which, pictures of our piers are over in the House Proud section. All of them haven’t been built yet but you should be able to get the general idea.

And I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest

I knew it was inevitable, but I was sad to hear that Sandra Day O’Connor turned in her resignation. I remember when she was appointed. As a 13 year old girl, who thought girls could do anything, the Honorable O’Connor made it true.

Thanks for making a difference.

The Coolest Cards Ever

If you like really cool note cards then you should visit R. Nichols stationary. I placed an online order on Saturday and received my stationary today (that’s incredibly fast). In addition to the two boxes of cards I purchased, I also got a sampler bag of cards as a free gift. To my amazement, I noticed a small envelope taped to one of the boxes of cards. A personal, hand written thank you note from R. Nichols. How cool is that?

Seeing Double

If you visited this site between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon, you may have noticed that the site had a duplicate entry. The brilliant better-half sent me this email and all was clear:

First, when I deleted my browser cache, everything was OK. But before that, I had scoured the database tables and found no records that contained entry ID #846 (the duplicate one that you had deleted).

There’s a field in the mt_blog table named ‘blog_children_modified_on’ that controls the ‘conditional GET’ of the browser. A conditional GET is the way browsers save bandwidth… if they already have a cached up-to-date copy of a file, there’s no need to obtain a new one. [NOTE: mt_blog contains one record for each blog hosted on the Movable Type installation... therefore, we have only one record]

By updating this field to the current time, all cached versions should now be considered obsolete.

There’s also a field in the mt_entry table named ‘entry_modified_on’ which states when an entry has changed. That probably should be updated for the OK entry… that way both the ‘blog children’ field and valid weblog entry’s timestamp indicate that something has changed… which should make all browsers get the most up-to-date copy of the page.

The geekiness just warms the cockles of my heart.

Then, he out did himself by providing me with this link. There’s nothing better than old bawdy songs and inscriptions.
