I Just Had To Stop

For the bulk of today I’ve been steadily working on fantabulous handouts for my contracting gig. One of the handout jobs was just to format something that was already content-ready. The other handout (the actual fantabulous one) is nearly ready but I had to stop. I was overcome by a feeling of embarrassment for the system. Yeah, I was embarrassed for a piece of software. It happens.

It is a long story but I’ve contracted with the state since late 1998 (on a full- and part-time basis). I’ve been there for the “dark” days of the software product. I was there when it was so unstable that we had to regularly cancel the afternoon portion of a class. I’ve also been there when huge strides have been made and am actually proud of several things that have changed about the system. Really. I will actually stop a class to tell folks how happy I am that some functionality or another is now available. When I write Help topics and training documentation, I try to let that enthusiasm peek into the equation without ruining the professionalism of whatever it is I’m writing.

Today, though, I had to stop because I was embarrassed about two sections of the software that are coming out later this year. I’m a little thankful that I’m not on the training schedule for these two items.

My boss laughed when I talked to her on the phone this afternoon and told her I’d have to pick it up tomorrow. She feels my pain. The bottom line is that we’re there to train the system not design it. We’ll train whatever the system has to offer–good or not so good.

I’m Sure There’s A Seminar Waiting To Happen

Once in a imbibing mood, I decided that if I were ever going to teach on the college level that I would only teach the best course ever. The course would consist of comparing and contrasting short stories by southern writers with music from southern singer/songwriters along the lines of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. I believe that this would have to be a night class taught only to seniors. That’s because everyone would be required to have a cocktail while discussing the stories and songs.

You can imagine my glee and the occasional bark of laughter that this article brought.

Hold Me Back

Today for lunch we went to KFC. We actually ate in the store instead of doing the drive-thru. This is noteworthy and that’s why I even bring it up. While we were eating, a nimrod walked in and tried to order something not on the menu. Some kind of chicken sandwich. The cashier, who was very nice and efficient, said they didn’t have that item any more. Nimrod asked if he was at KFC. This is when the better-half and I locked eyes. The better-half asked me how nimrod could have missed the big picture of the Colonel when he walked in. I wondered what other chicken place was within 10 miles of this KFC.

Then for the love of God and all that is holy, the nimrod asked again if this was KFC. I asked the better-half to hold me back because I was going to hit that nimrod with the intelligence stick. The better-half suggested pulling out the clue stick instead.

Canoeing Today

This morning after a delicious breakfast of a fried egg, a couple of slices of bacon and some corn cakes we went canoeing. Here’s a brief lowdown: we saw a Great Blue Heron catch a fish and then swallow it down. We saw several muskrats and 2 beavers. One of the beavers whacked the water hard with its tail.

In other news, we saw a dead buzzard on the side of the road and we wondered if other buzzards will eat his dead-ass up (apologies to Wesley Willis) or if a dead buzzard gets free passage because the other buzzards know what that dead one ate during its life.

You Wouldn’t Like Me When I’m Angry

I can’t believe I forgot to mention that I had a Hulk popsicle while over at A’s house. How cool is that?

That’s a Quarter

I went over to my friend A’s house today. She is moving and decided to have a yard sale to lighten the load. I took some stuff over since having a yard sale at my house is insane (we can’t see the road). I ended up getting rid of most of my stuff and pocketing $25. Sweet.

I also scored some albums from her stack. That’s actual vinyl I’m grooving to now.
Here’s what I picked up:
Wild Cherry (Play That Funky Music is playing right now)
Talking Heads-True Stories
Los Lobos-By the Light of the Moon
Def Leppard-Hysteria (really, what other album is there?)

The Chicken That Was

Since I haven’t talked about food in awhile, I thought I’d tell you about the Chicken That Rocked.

On Sunday we smoked a 3lb chicken (we used the poultry perfect rub from the splendid cookbook, Smoke & Spice). That chicken was everything you’d expect from a smoked chicken…juicy, tasty and good to the last bite.

Sunday, we ate the chicken just as it came off the smoker. It was, obviously, holding onto the smoky flavor. We served baked potatoes that we cooked on the grill. The skins weren’t very crunchy but the insides were almost like mashed potatoes. Delicious.

Tuesday night we had some more chicken and it didn’t seem as smoky. Or maybe that was because I couldn’t breathe much less taste. We served it plain–just slices of meat warmed in the microwave.

Last night I made a package of Vigo Black Beans and Rice. I added some chopped chicken about 15 minutes into the cooking process. I also added 2 generous tablespoons of Arriba’s chipotle pepper salsa. When I lifted the lid to begin the process of burrito wrapping, the smokiness of the chicken was powerful. I couldn’t believe it. The burritos were lovely. Yeah, we eat lots of burritos.

Today for lunch we had a repeat of dinner last night and that chicken was still really great.

As an aside, we almost always smoke with hickory–since we have lots of that thanks to that hurricane that ripped through last September.

Don’t Mess with Mutha Nature

I’ve been fortunate enough over the past week to witness a few pretty cool wildlife-preying-on-other-wildlife episodes right on my own property. Yes, pretty cool and, yes, preying. Survival of the fittest, baby.

On Saturday morning, I took advantage of the amazing weather to finally put stain on the steps leading off the porch. While I was working on the steps, a barred owl landed on one of the trees at the edge of the yard and startled a squirrel. The squirrel was in another tree about 10 feet away from the owl and none too happy about the situation. For the next 30 minutes a stand-off ensued where the owl flew to increasing closeness and the squirrel tried to keep the tree in between the two of them.

Hot Fudge Holy Moley

We’ve had a wisteria bush in the backyard for eons. It grows and grows and grows. I prune it and prune it and prune it. It grows and grows and grows. It has never bloomed. I’ve always been so disappointed because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the smell of a wisteria bush.

Well, check it out…

Feel Free To Steal This Idea

While I was at the doctor’s office yesterday, I wondered why doctor’s offices don’t use kiosks to collect data from their patients. I hadn’t been to my primary care doctor since 2000 (what can I say–I’m healthy) and that meant that I needed to fill out pages of forms telling them, again and again, my name, social security number and birth date. Wouldn’t it have been easier to sit me down in front of a kiosk terminal, have me complete a simple page of information and have a database correlate all that information and spit something out for the clerk or nurse to shove into my file?

Ok, so there are rickety people out there who can barely walk into a doctor’s office and find a place to sit in the waiting room without help from someone–they can get the wasteful pieces of poorly copied forms. The rest of us can sit down and type in or even just use drop-downs and check boxes to complete the endless forms. I know there is a way to ensure all that data is secure so HIPAA is golden.

When, oh when, are we going to drag everyone kicking and screaming into our brave new world?
