Because I’m mean

Since I’ve taken over the IT responsibilities for my organization, I’ve really seen a different side to the people I work with (not the blubber side of that one despicable co-worker, thank goodness). The kind of stupid side. I don’t mean they actually are stupid, but that they are rendered stupid when it comes to a bump in the technology road. I can see why the last IT person was so surly 90% of the time. Well, not really, but I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Yesterday for the 560th time a, I’m not kidding when I say she’s become unhinged, co-worker asked me to come look at her computer. Something was wrong with her computer–ohmygodwe’reallgonnadiebecausemycomputerdoesn’twork. One of her monitors was displaying a message that there was no signal. I turned on her computer which sent a signal to the monitor. Damn, if she didn’t email me this morning and tell me it did it again last night when she turned off her computer. Because her computer was off and her monitor was on just like the day before. And, when I explained again how come it was happening she then asked me if it was because of the battery. It was a good thing she was 4 hours away from me this morning.

Another co-worker–the manager who wears purple velour exercise suits to work–bitched at me because she’s so busy that she can’t be bothered to update a couple of spreadsheets that the rest of us use to do her job. I reminded her gently, because she is the one who will bring a gun to work, that I know from busy and we can’t know the information that’s very lonely in her big empty skull so we have to rely on her spreadsheets. If they aren’t right we can’t do her job.

Then I found out that same velour-wearing moron gave out our brand-new password that she agreed she’d keep safe. The password didn’t even last a week. I had to request that another be assigned to the organization so that every Tom, Dick and Harry can’t take our information and pass it off as their own. I ratted her out to the director because by that time (oh around 10am) I had had it.

On the couch

I had a presentation to deliver tonight and I think it went well. I had everyone in class traipse about the building looking for examples of wayfinding. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and now they know a bit more about a design principle that most of us take for granted. It’s fascinating, really.

My laptop crapped out in between shutting it off after work and hauling it to class. I hope the better-half can work his magic. Luckily all my work documents are on thumb drives (which need to be backed up on Monday), but there is quite a bit of this semester’s work on there that I’d hate to lose. My fingers are crossed.

I ordered a calzone for dinner tonight and I have to say I love having food delivered to my door. This is the 7th week of classes and only the second time I’ve had a delivery. Holy cow how nice it is to order something and 30 minutes later someone knocks on the door. It’s been at least 14 years since I lived anywhere near a delivery zone.

By all reports, the newest member of the household, Jim, did well at the vet. He’s now neutered and all of his shots are current. He’s really becoming a love bug and is only a wee bit skittish now. That behavior may not actually be skittishness, but kitteness.

We’ve been letting him explore the house a bit. Simon is not thrilled with that turn of events, but we’re not forcing anything other than breaking up the Simon-smackdowns. Who knew our little ‘fraidy-cat had so much aggression? I’m sure things will work out.

I think I mentioned awhile back that I’ve been catching up on Doctor Who. I finally saw the last episodes of David Tennant’s Doctor and I’ve watched a wee handful of Tom Baker’s turn. Thanks to Netflix for streaming the old shows. No thanks to AMC who abruptly stopped hosting The Prisoner. I was only half-way through.

I didn’t start watching Doctor Who until the reboot of the series and then it was sporadic. I do appreciate how well the universal storyline of the Doctor has stayed true even through the decades it’s been on the telly. The last two episodes of the David Tennant Doctor mentioned something I just learned about in a Tom Baker show.

The sets of the Tom Baker Doctor remind me very much of the Space 1999 sets–you know everything is on a sound stage. The actors are more like stage performers. The way television is now is so very different than it was in the 60s. Even with the campy, low budget feel of the current Doctor Who shows it’s obvious the budget is big. It’s a style choice to appear a little campy and low budget. The writing is still witty and well done.

Yeah, I’m late to the Doctor Who party, but I’m glad it’s still going on. I can’t help but think If I had a sonic screwdriver, I wouldn’t have to wait to see the better-half to fix the computer.

A Little Ray of Sunshine

OK, so I know I’ve been quite whiny lately. Onward!

It is raining here in college town and it’s something like 55 degrees. I need to go buy some socks because I have only one pair of white ones here and that won’t cut it with the shoes I brought with me. I’m going to have to seriously look at the wardrobe this weekend and figure out what can live here and what should stay at home. I am trying really hard not to put on a sweater because when I go out later this evening, will I then need a coat because I’m so used to being snug in a sweater? Because there isn’t a coat here. Because I didn’t know it was going to be 55 degrees here when I packed on Monday. Seriously, we’re no better at predicting weather as far ahead as a couple of days?

I understand at home there’s a tropical depression unloading massive amounts of rain. Yesterday morning the weather guy said something along the lines of: “eh, we might get rain on Wednesday”…really? A tropical depression just whipped itself up?

Before this sounds like I’m whining about the weather I am very happy it is raining. It really hasn’t rained since late May/early June. I’m happy that it finally feels like fall. Now, why didn’t I buy some hot chocolate when I stopped at the store last night?

Can’t decide

I am either suffering from:
malaise: a vague or unfocused feeling of mental uneasiness, lethargy, or discomfort
OR
ennui: a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom
OR
I’m just tired of people not living up to my expectations. People at work need to do their jobs. I need to be thanked occasionally for becoming the IT person and doing my other duties while babysitting otherwise intelligent adults who become blathering idiots when faced with a technology problem. I need to not have people ask me to come into their meeting to clear up a few things and then the primary questioner dismisses me. With an emphasis on dis.

Also, the backlight on my car radio went up in flames the other day. After doing some research, it’s a known flaw in the design of my car’s model year. The research also indicated that it’s often a pain in the butt to have the dealer fix it because even though it’s a known flaw not all dealers realize there’s a service ticket (or whatever it’s called) and so want to charge you up to $900 to fix it. My car is 7 years old and a factory radio should not cost $900.

Hello Crutchfield. A new radio should be arriving at the house today. It has a USB port and an input jack. And, even though I’ll be going from a 6 CD changer to one, I’ll have those two new inputs and the CD player will actually play CDs with MP3s and WMAs. What a concept. The ride to and from college town should be filled with more interesting listening now. Maybe that will help with the malaise/ennui.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Last winter when we had tons of snow we fed the black cat. It was cold. There was snow and we couldn’t let Blackie keep showing up with those imploring eyes and not feed her. Then there was Jim in the spring. We fed them both. We adopted Jim and started feeding him on the porch. Blackie went away for awhile. She came back and started eating close to the house. We busted her last Saturday sneaking on the porch to eat out of Jim’s bowl.

Then, the better-half emailed me that there’s a new kitten.

Last night at 1:51, the better-half sent this:

Simon is meowing downstairs; I go to the porch door and turn the porch lights on bright.
Jim in standing between the chairs and the door to the house. Blackie is standing between and behind the chairs, near the screen. New kitten is sitting on top of the pillow in my chair, as pretty as you please.
They all look at me standing in the doorway of the house.
No wonder Simon’s upset.

We’ll be figuring out to trap Blackie. I’m going to sound like Bob Barker, but Spay and Neuter your Pets, fortheloveofgod. I’m not sure what we’re going to do about the new kitten. We’re not going to be more than a 2 cat family. Anyone want a cat?

Then There Were Four

Jim has officially joined our household. It’s not like we all didn’t know that was going to happen. He’s been living on the porch for the last couple of months. Last weekend when the better-half came to visit the college town, we left Jim with his very own feeder so he wouldn’t have to worry about his next meal.

The better-half took Jim to the vet for the first time today. He’s healthy and has had his first round of shots. He goes back in a month to finish his shots and to have “the boys” snipped.

We’ll have to figure out the whole move into the house thing at a later date. He’s quite content to live on the porch with access to the back yard so we’ll do that until it gets too cold.

Simon, I’m sure, is thrilled with this turn of events. He’s such a baby about conflict and the antics of the kitten. We had hoped that Simon would assert himself, but the better-half says he now thinks Jim is going to be the dominate cat.

The Drill

The saga begins Monday afternoon: load car with everything except work bag and laptop. Those go to the car in the morning.
Tuesday: Get to work around 7:30am. Leave at 4pm. Drive to college town. Hit grocery store for dinner. Make dinner, talk to better-half, read, finish any homework, go to sleep.
Wednesday: Wake up and work until 4pm. Run errands if needed, eat dinner, catch 6:30pm bus and then walk to classroom. Take the long way around. Get out of class around 9:30. Catch the 9:45 bus or wait until the 10:45 (lord, please don’t let me miss the 9:45). Talk to the better-half, wind down and go to bed.
Thursday: Wake up and work until 3:15pm. Catch 3:30 bus to class. Hopefully, can start walking now that it’s not 90 degrees. Get out of class and then meet with group for project work for an hour. Catch bus home. Eat. Tidy up and pack up for Friday depending on my schedule.
Friday: Wake up and make preparations for a leisurely leave schedule. Or, wake up, race like a bat out of hell to get on the road early. Three weeks in and so far, I’ve had to be in Richmond one Friday before noon and one Friday I’ve had a web-conference meeting that I did in the apartment. This weekend the better-half and I were in the college town until Sunday morning so that made the schedule at home more compressed (not complaining, had a great time over the weekend).
Good thing I’m organized.

The complete opposite of face punching

Love the song, now wish I knew more about ASL…

Wherein I advocate a swift punch to the face

I subscribe to a number of feeds about music. Shocking. I know. I was looking at some of those feeds this morning and quickly pushed past one but felt the sudden urge to punch someone in the face. I wondered what on Earth had just made me feel like that.

It was this:

He’s in a band called Baths and I don’t even know where to begin. Could the face punching urge come from seeing the baby doll head in his pocket? Could it be those effing chops? The 70s called and they want their hair back. Could it be the expression on his face? Is he about to pick something off that trellis–like maybe his self respect?

Thanks Douchebag for bringing out my need for violence on this otherwise lovely Friday.

The Weekend Was Spectacular

The weather was finally amazing. We were outside for as much of the weekend as could be managed. We completely weeded the front flower bed that had lately become part of the lawn (oops). It’s now back in order with mulch and you can actually see the stepping stones.

We ignored the doorbell when someone stopped by to ask us for money. They were persistent and came back a second day. Just because you ring the bell, doesn’t mean I have to answer–especially since I now know you don’t even live in my neighborhood (ass). I’m sick of being asked to buy something for some kid I don’t even know. My taxes pay for the crap in the county. If you don’t like that the taxes don’t go far enough, then pay for your kid to do X-Y-Z. I’d especially like someone to help me pay for my tuition. Maybe I’ll ask the next person wanting me to pay for soccer, t-ball or whateverthefuck if they will pull out their wallet for my big, fat bill . Seriously, keep off my lawn. Also, the Nieces are totally allowed to ask me to buy whatever and the pre-schooler of a co-worker can ask, but that’s it.

The woman I work with who has two small children at home, but scratches her belly so I can see the white of the whale can go fug herself when she shows up with the gift wrap order form. I saw her damn belly again today and told my boss I was going to start asking for $5 every time I see that thing. My tuition won’t be a problem by the end of the month.

I’m a little tired…it’s been a long day what with all the whale sightings, the long drive and my doing my job today as well as two other people’s jobs. I’m a little testy. Perhaps a beer is in order.
