Think about what?

A co-worker just finished watching a webcast and then came to talk to me about the feasibility of doing something like that for our clients. We talked about how that’s a good idea, we could easily do it and why doesn’t our client do more of that in the first place.

I told the co-worker about my presentation to a training subcommittee two weeks ago and how one of the options was to do something just like what she had just observed. I also mentioned how the client’s lead on such things was in the room and how he was engaged in the discussion. I also said she may want to mention it to him since he and I had talked yesterday about increasing communication with the people in the field.

My co-worker winds up the conversation with me with the statement that I should think about it. Think about what? Think about how well my presentation went over? How it generated a lot of discussion and got some people really interested in different ways to provide training? Or, should I think about how she comes three years late to the party and then thinks that she’s just thought of something novel?

What I’m really thinking about is how it’s 2:30 and I go home in an hour and a half.

Picture and Words, oh my

Neglect blog much?

We made the season’s first fish tacos last night. I’m not sure why we don’t make these all the time, but spring and summer seem more suited to fish tacos.

The better-half grilled a tilapia fillet using the grill pan. And, I made guacamole, a cabbage salad/slaw thing and black beans. We had some salsa from last year’s canning extravaganza and decided it was too spicy and so we pitched the contents of all the remaining jars.

Yes, I just said something was too spicy. It was all about the peppers and not a damn thing about the other ingredients. We’ve opened several of the jars over the past few months and every jar contained salsa that wasn’t worthy. Life is way too short to eat crappy salsa.

Behold, the fish taco:

Bringing Back the Memories

Like the first day of summer vacation

A few things happened over the weekend that put me in a completely different frame of mind from last week. We finally celebrated Chinese New Year (originally canceled because of bad weather). I have to tell you that I have a huge respect for people who work in professional kitchens–my legs, feet and back were tired from the work we did to put dinner on for 5 adults and 2 children. We began working on Friday and finished about an hour before people showed up (obviously, we didn’t work all night long, but still).

As I’ve mentioned, cooking helps me get in a better mood so I had that going for me. Around 3pm on Saturday, I checked the mailbox and saw that there was a letter from the graduate school that I applied to back in January. As time has moved on from that application, I really started to think that I was out of luck. I opened the letter in the garage so I could recycle the other crap we tend to get on Saturdays and was over-the-moon to find out I’ve been accepted. I officially start with the fall semester. I still haven’t gotten a letter and materials from the department I’ll be joining, but the graduate school says let’s go, we’re going to have so much fun (OK, maybe the letter wasn’t quite like that, but that’s what the voices in my head tell me). As I was opening the letter, I thought about how I was nervous like that when I was applying to undergraduate. For the master’s it was different, I got an email and then official notifications–I’d already taken a class in the program so I had a relationship with the professors.

After we set off fireworks to end our New Year celebration, The Niece spent the night. She and the better-half star-gazed while I cleaned up the enormous amount of dishes (I think they were multiplying on the counter). After a little time snuggling on the couch, I told The Niece she had to go to bed because I had to go to bed. She hemmed and hawed until I told her I didn’t say she had to go to sleep, she just had to get in bed. The light bulb went off in her head and she went right upstairs and got settled down for the night. I have no idea when she went to sleep, but I know at 2am when I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep that she was soundly asleep. I ended up reading on the couch and napping until 8. She slept until 8:30. It’s so much nicer now that she’s getting older. I don’t miss those wake-up-at-6am mornings.

We went out to breakfast and then walked all through Maymont. By the end of our Maymont trip all of us were tired and hot so we made a game of who could whine the best. We finished our day together with a trip to the World’s Busiest McDonald’s and a trip to Kroger to buy cat litter and tissues. Thrilling stuff, I tell you.

My good mood is persisting because a little while ago a very high-maintenance, part-time trainer just insisted I hadn’t done part of my job in front of my supervisor. My supervisor knows me well enough that she didn’t even pause the conversation to look over at me. I, of course, have done my job. High-maintenance people are a pain in the ass. As Colbert would say, “you’re on notice.”

Beneath the wheel I cannot slow its rotation down

With the time change (I know, get over it already) and the relentless beating we seem to be getting at work, I’ve been exhausted every night this week. I was supposed to have Friday off but my personal plans changed a bit, and as such I decided to go ahead and take off since it’s nearly impossible to take back a leave slip after submitting it. When I told my supervisor about the change in plans, she jumped on having me come in for an afternoon meeting. I couldn’t tell her that I was still planning on taking the day off because see the above reference to relentless beating. We’re all tired of being poked by the stick.

So, I’ll go into the office in the afternoon and then reschedule those 4 hours of leave some time soon.

I looked for a song about being exhausted and found this one by Joseph Arthur. I like him in spite of once seeing him in concert where it seemed like the whole time he was worried about his tape machine and not about the audience.

Edited to add:
Ended up at the office all day Friday and my boss neglected to invite me to the meeting that she insisted I come in for…the time was nebulous and she didn’t bother to let me know when or where it was. I was a little hot. GRRRRRR.

Whoa

30% budget cut announced at work this morning. We’re grant-funded and make zero dollars…so there’s no making up that deficit. Layoffs are coming. We should hear in April. At least we’re all still employed through June 30th.

I need to make that eye doctor appointment before my benefits are in jeopardy.

A Break In the Rain

Yesterday afternoon it stopped raining enough for us to walk around and take some pictures.

We went around the side of the porch and startled a bunny:

We checked on the garlic:

The kale has rejuvenated nicely in the cold frame:

The forsythia we planted last year is about to burst out in yellow:

The first daffodil has three blooms:

We’ve been feeding this stray a few times a week for months. He usually backs up into the woods and then waits for me to go back in the house before he’ll come out to eat. Yesterday we sat on the back steps and out-waited him. This is him licking his chops:

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Good music to bring up the levels on a rainy day.

Finally!

We have daffodils blooming.

The crocus that have survived the nibbling hordes are also blooming. Spring is finally showing up around here.

The better-half tilled the garden the other day. It’s been so muddy he hasn’t been able to get out there. We also uncovered the cold frames and think some of our lettuce, spinach and cabbage have survived pretty well. I lifted up some of the hay (straw?) the other day and we have the beginnings of garlic.

I can’t wait for the asparagus this year. We can finally harvest.

In my email this morning

Once again, I’m embarrassed to be a Virginian.

Virginia Commonwealth University received a letter from Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli requesting that the Commonwealth’s public universities and colleges rescind policies that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

The University’s senior leadership team and I are examining the issue closely. Provost Gottfredson is planning forums to provide students, faculty and staff an opportunity to discuss the implications of the Attorney General’s request.

It’s still 2010, isn’t it? We didn’t just jump back in time to 1955, did we?
