Tired and cranky

At work, the department’s org chart lists three positions just like mine. I’m the only one in the position now. This means I’m really busy and, in all honesty, its OK with me. I’m learning a lot and kicking work out the door.

But, and there’s always a but, isn’t there? There is someone on the team that just can’t get the hang of what in the heck she’s supposed to do and how I can help/do the tough technical stuff. Seriously, if someone is really good at something and it takes them zero time to do it, then why not work with them? Why not make it easier on yourself? We’re at a point where this person is seriously impacting the rest of the team. Our boss is being driven crazy. I’m not getting enough notice to take care of things and so I have to run around even faster than usual to pry a spot into my jammed-up schedule to take care of this person’s stuff. A new hire is shadowing the having-a-hard-time person and that is not a good way to start off.

It’s to a point where I wonder if the hard-time person is a)on some sort of medication, b)sustained a head injury in the past couple of years, or c)is about to be fired. A, B, and C are not meant to be funny. There is something seriously weird and wrong going on. The sad part? We want people to succeed. We lift people up because we expect the same extended hand when we need it. At some point, though, and I think we’re really close to it now, we have to let go and hope the person has enough wherewithal to get out before a pink slip lands on a desk.

I’ve been in this position once before and it was a really long time ago when I worked for a bank. I was a temp. There were two admins in the department and I did whatever they needed to support the rest of the team. An admin went out on maternity leave and I covered for her. The other admin’s flaws came into sharp focus. When everyone can see the lackluster work, it’s not a good thing. That admin was fired. I was hired. The lackluster work is coming into focus. I have a good idea how this story is going to end.

The Game of Life

This weekend we had responsibility for The Nieces. I picked them up from school on Friday and their parents picked them up from our house this afternoon. I will never forget my name because I heard it 123,405,345.56 times. Exactly.

Last night we played the board game Life. It was awesome. I played that game with my sisters when we were young. It still remains a great board game. The rules have changed a bit and now you have “action” items to do throughout the game. Of course, we didn’t know this until we realized we hadn’t picked any of those cards. I was in charge of cards and decided to finish reading the directions (smile).

One of those action items is that the draw-er of the card must go fetch drinks. I hollered “Wine” in an Exorcist voice and The Nieces yelled for Blood Orange Pellegrino. We’re schmancy here (also have you tried the flavored Pellegrino? You need to do it.). The better-half had to go fetch the drinks and I think we may have also made money from the bank, but I don’t remember.

The better-half also drew the action item that forced the rest of us to try to make him laugh. The Nieces went for the tickle and I went for the mooning. I think we were all in a puddle of hilarity before my mooning got past the point of tramp stamp, if I had a tramp stamp. Which I don’t. Seriously, there are things I won’t do and I won’t do that. I also won’t drop trou in front of The Nieces. At least not without many more Action Cards of Wine.

The game of Life is still a pretty good game and I can’t wait for them to spend the night so we can stay up too late playing.

At Target on Friday, we were in the toy area looking for games and I said Life out loud because Nut 2 said she wanted it. A mother said it’s over there. I found it and we commiserated on how much we both liked to play the game. I guess there are some things that don’t change no matter if you were playing at Life or living it.

Tempurpedic after 5 years

We have two Tempurpedic beds. For over a month, the one we purchased in 2008 has been making enough noise to wake us both up. We’ve moved the support feet around and that hasn’t really helped. If your super-comfortable bed is too loud to sleep in, then you start to get a bit ragey. I’m not a good sleeper to begin with so the bed screaming every time the better-half moves makes me crazy ragey.

As it turns out, the foundation piece (aka box spring) is made out of fairy dust and unicorn poop. That is, it isn’t made out of real stuff. The “wood” of the foundation is paper. The drunks who put it together missed several times with the staple gun and the screws are an amalgamation of someone’s disorganized garage. This is how I imagine the guys on the line putting together this piece, “Dude, just pick a screw, I don’t care which and while you are over there fetch me a beer.”

We’re about to make a trip to the hardware store to buy plywood to build our own foundation so we can sleep tonight. This isn’t exactly what I thought I’d be doing today.
Update
The completely solid foundation we built gave us zero noises last night. Unless you consider human and cat snoring as noise.

Here we go again

Another winter storm started last night and the conditions were right enough that I worked from home today:

(for those keeping score, the picture shows rain, sleet and snow all at once)

My department met on Wednesday to discuss our plans for the bad weather. The business never closes because of the work we do and so that means essential or not, we all are supposed to be work, work, working. My department director said it was up to each of us to discuss our plans with our supervisors. My supervisor and I decided that working from home was the right option for me.

As it turns out there were some parts of the business that had heart palpitations at the number of employees working from home today. We’ve basically been ordered to be on-site tomorrow. I guess the snow falling right now will magically disappear from the roads tonight.

As it turns out, my supervisor for today wasn’t much help:

You’ve Been Rung Out

We listen to WNRN pretty religiously. We made a donation to them at the end of last year that put us into their VIP group. Which sounds schmancy. It is when you consider, we went to see a show last night, on WNRN, for free at the Montfair Vineyard.

I’m all for schmancy now!

David Wax Museum performed a short set in Montfair’s Barrel Room:

Montfair Vineyard
is at the end of a tiny dirt, actually muddy because, damn, it never stops precipitating in Virginia these days, road. It’s quite lovely and I’d like to go back when the valley and mountains are green–not hazy shade of winter brown and grey.

Nearly the entire staff of WNRN was at the event so every once in awhile you’d hear a conversation and not need to turn around because you knew who was talking…because they sound exactly like they do on the radio. Imagine that.

Montfair was selling wine. Dinner and the show were on WNRN. We bought wine, had a BBQ sandwich and totally dug the show.

This song was the last one they performed and we got to sing and clap along:

Cold H. Old

The better-half and I just walked down to our neighborhood market to pick up a few things. It was snowing and some of the sidewalks are still covered in snow from earlier this week. By the time we got home, I declared that I was done with being outside. The wind chill makes it feel like 13. I think that’s cold enough to be done with going outside.

This morning has been pretty productive. I went to the dentist to have my last treatment on my dead front teeth completed. Last year both upper front teeth had root canals. One was internally bleached and the second one is now the same color as the first. It’s quite a difference. I figure after years of oddity that I can finally look a bit more normal. Whatever that means. I was not self-conscious about the teeth, but I’m also glad I went ahead with the procedures.

When I got back from the dentist, we went to the big grocery store and then we hit the little store for a couple of things. I’m also on the third or fourth load of laundry. Now it’s time to think about something for lunch. And, I’m going to make an attempt at convincing the batter-half that watching a movie this afternoon is a great idea.

Oysters in a bag

Late last year we saw an ad for Oysters for Life and decided to adopt/sponsor an oyster cage (hi, cage 1917A!). Today we received a bag of oysters. I was expecting a net bag in a styrofoam box. We ended up with the cute little cooler bag and an oyster knife too.

The oysters went straight into the refrigerator. They will be on the grill tomorrow afternoon when some friends join us for dinner. I can’t wait to taste the oysters from just down the road.

This Week Will Be Weird

On Saturday, a mere two days ago, I left the house at 7am and got home at 7pm. Where was I? In Virginia Beach at a SharePoint Saturday conference. Please do not be too jealous. Really, just settle down.

This morning, my new supervisor and our boss stopped by my cube and asked about the conference. The first question out of my new supervisor’s mouth was, “How long did you work on Saturday?” and then I told her. The two of them looked at each other and smiled. Or maybe those were grimaces. I had already put 8 hours down for this coming Friday to make up for the conference, but now I suddenly had 4 more hours to dispense with this week. They both said figure it out and block off your calendar. This is why I like working for the both of them. They get the whole work/life thing and live it. It’s refreshing.

It will be nice on the one hand to have truncated days this week, but on the other hand it means that I’m basically in meetings all week. When my supervisor and I were looking for time for me to work on a project, I opened my calendar and she said something to the effect of well, crap. Yeah. I won’t be producing anything this week. Unless it can get done in the 30 minutes I have wafting around over the next three days.

Now, on with the very interesting part of SharePoint Saturday. Someone I don’t know well, by sight only, asked me if I could give her a ride home from the conference. She was going down the day before with another co-worker, but had no way to get home. I told her that was no problem…she lives .5 miles away, if even that. I was a little concerned because stranger in my car for two hours and I’m not good at small talk. As it turns out, we went to the same high school. She graduated a year after I did. I threatened to find my yearbook and bring it in…if I actually knew where it was, I’d do it.

We cracked each other up with stories. She has a much better memory of high school than I do, probably because her experience didn’t suck. I did tell her about a memory I have of our campus-style school and that was of the cat fights in courtyards between classes. It had to have happened more than once because why else would that be such a strong memory? She went silent for a moment and then told me that as I was telling her that memory one face came to mind. When she said the girl’s name, we both just burst out laughing because I am sure that girl could throw a punch.

Truth

When one of my sisters and I were young, we would be told to go to our rooms to separate ourselves. Then we would talk through the HVAC vents.

Tonight, the better-half and I were half arguing. I was in the bathroom speaking under my breath and the better-half was in the basement looking for a bottle of wine. He heard me complaining. We talked through the floor vent. Exactly as I did when I was 8. Guess he understands about arguing with siblings.

Or I need to shut my mouth.
